State of Emergency...
That is what the folks around here are calling the protest they're going to have, surrounding the State of the Union address next Tuesday. I wrote up a press release and sent it out to all the media folks in our area, so if you don't see a story soon, start writing letters to ask why not?
BTW, before I get into the press release, as a cheatsheet, here is what we're annoyed about with the current powers-that-be:
- War in Iraq STILL going.
- Illegal wiretaps and searches of American citizens that could EASILY be accomplished within the law.
- Osama Bin Laden: not caught.
- FEMA and Feds hampering reconstruction in the Gulf South.
- Jobs that pay well are leaving (Hi, Ford!), while the rich get tax breaks.
- Education that teaches to a test, not toward our future.
- Medicare, Medicaid, Food Stamps, Student Loans, all cut.
- Scooter Libby, Tom Delay, Jack Abramoff, Duke Cunningham.
- Cliff Stearns taking over $300K from companies that are aided by the Medicare Prescription Bill. Stearns now says that it is a terrible bill and he voted for it because Dick Cheney didn't tell him the truth about it.
OK, but, as Modest Mouse says, "good news is on the way!" Here are the things Dave wants to do. See if you can tell the difference?
- Give the people an honest government and the freedoms Americans are guaranteed.
- Create new production jobs, by creating alternative energy Freedom Fuels, and the machines they will power
- Balance the Federal Budget and make sure your tax dollars are spent WISELY.
- Create a military that is well-equipped, well-trained to deal with current threats, and is only used when TRUE diplomacy fails.
- Universal Healthcare, for everyone willing to work. 26 other countries have it, are we dumber than they are or something?
- If so, this should help, A lifetime of education for everyone willing to learn.
We favor solutions. They favor band-aids.
We favor the law. They favor breaking it.
We favor helping America. They favor helping oil companies.
We favor REAL freedom, they favor cowering and sacrificing liberties that our soldiers died to protect, to the terrorists.
Who do you want in office?
PRESS RELEASE
Sixth Congressional District Democratic Candidate Dave Bruderly will view the President's State of the Union address next Tuesday (Jan. 31) at Harry's Seafood Bar and Grille in downtown Gainesville.
Prior to the speech, local Gainesville activists will meet at the corner of University Avenue and 13th Street, for a march to the restaurant.
It is anticipated that President Bush will speak about his plans for continuing the war in Iraq, which is now estimated to cost Americans between $1 and $2 trillion, along with an incalculable human cost.
Many experts predict that, regardless of incredible efforts by our valiant and under-equipped troops, providing new infrastructure for Iraqis, the country will likely deteriorate into civil war upon our exit.
Bush may also attempt to explain his unilateral decision to use American assets to eavesdrop and spy on American civilians.
Richard Hersh, director of The Truth Project of Palm Beach County, told a panel of House Democrats that his [Quaker] group and others in South Florida have been infiltrated and spied on despite having no connections to terrorists.
"Agents rummaged through the trash, snooped into e-mails, hacked Web sites and listened in on phone conversations," Hersh said. "We know that address books and activist meeting lists have disappeared."
Bruderly believes President Bush is trading the rights and liberties that define America for the false sense of safety that placates Americans.
He also says the current Congressional leadership is incapable of dealing with President Bush, as an effective check and balance.
"We need Representatives willing to say no to this free-spending, law-breaking President," said Bruderly. "When I am elected, I will not support President Bush 95 percent of the time, as the incumbent has, I will support North Florida 100 percent of the time. America is not just a people, it is the rule of law and it is the right of liberty. We cannot protect America by destroying the liberties that define it.
It is time to bring our troops home and to allow Iraqis to create their own identity, as our nation did, following the Revolutionary War. It is time to stop treating half of our citizens like unpatriotic criminals to scare the other half into silence.
It is time to rebuild our Gulf South, to free ourselves from foreign oil dependence, to educate our children, to heal our sick, to bring our people together in spirit and to ready our country for the global economy that so many other nations have already joined. The energy of America should be directed toward growth, not toward destruction."
